WEDNESDAY, FOURTH WEEK OF EASTER
Reading 1: Acts 12:24 – 13:5 We continue to hear about the dynamic progress of the early Church. The Holy Spirit is obviously in charge.
Gospel: Jn 12: 44-50 Jesus reveals himself as the light of the world. He is the manifestation of the Father. To heed him is to heed the Father.
KEEP THE LIGHT OF CHRIST EVER BURNING
In Jesus’ day, manna was a reminder of a particular time in the history of the nation of Israel. In the gospel passage today, we find Jesus proclaim Himself as the light of the world. This Divine light leads us to truth; while spiritual darkness blinds us and leads us to fall into sin deceit and sin. Most of us know by experience that when in darkness a person becomes blind and is unable to know the right path or perform the right task. Imagine, what would happen if at any point in time all the sources of light including the sun would disappear? Utter turmoil and chaos will envelop the world because of it. As is the case with physical darkness so also it is with spiritual darkness. When our conscience is darkened, it blinds our minds and hearts. And for this reason, we incline towards what is wrong and sinful.
In the first reading from the book of the Acts of the Apostles, we see that while the apostles were fasting and praying, the Holy Spirit descended upon them and guided them to carry on the mission of proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. These very apostles, abandoned, betrayed and denied Jesus during his passion. Some even persecuted the followers of Jesus. Indeed they were all in darkness and were blinded. But, when they received the light of Christ the doors of their minds and hearts opened to the truth. The flame of the Holy Spirit touched their hearts and they went on to become the beacons of Christ, to carry His light to the entire world thus saving people from the darkness of evil.
Jesus today promises us that if we believe in Him we will not remain in darkness. Many times in our weakness, we fall into darkness. Jesus offers us His light so that we may see the right path to come out of this darkness. There are various means through which we receive the light of Christ such as family prayer, Holy Mass, devotions, reading of the Bible, etc. Let us resort to them every day in our life thus keeping the light of Christ ever burning.
