ACKNOWLEDGED BEFORE THE FATHER

‘If there is a God why is there suffering in the world?’ This common argument proposed by atheists becomes a challenge to discipleship. But Jesus tells his disciples: “a disciple is not above his master.” Jesus suffered and was put to death in the most humiliating and painful way. And this was an unjust and unfair punishment for someone without sin. How much more will the world that loves evil cause suffering to his followers?

We know that this was preparation for martyrdom for many of the apostles. They endured suffering for the sake of the Gospel and for bringing more people to Christ. But in all this, there were motivated by the promise that the Lord made to them, “Everyone who acknowledges me before others, I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.”

Jesus encourages us to not fear the things or people that can only damage or kill the body, but to fear and love God who will judge our soul. God gave us our body and soul to be kept pure until we return to him. Let us hold on to him as we strive towards that purity. God is our shelter from evil and sin. We are so precious to him that even the hairs of our head are numbered. Everything we have, we have received from God. Let us keep pure what we have received and return it to him with gratitude for his great love and care for us.

God gives and desires to give us many more blessings that will allow us to live faithful and holy lives. He desires that we follow in the footsteps of his son, proclaiming the kingdom of God to all people and holding firm to his promise of salvation. Even if we encounter bodily suffering in this life, our soul lies secure in God who is our refuge, our shelter and our defender. As Saint Teresa of Avila says in ‘The Way of Perfection’: “Never suppose that either the evil or the good that you do will remain secret, however strict may be your enclosure.”

Response: You who are poor seek God, and your hearts will revive.
