CHOSEN TO BE PART OF GOD’S PLANS
Today is the feast of the Nativity of Mary, exactly nine months after the Church has celebrated her Immaculate Conception. Mary was chosen to be the mother of the Lord. By the power of the Spirit, and through her obedience to the will of God, the Word became flesh and was conceived in her womb. Through the dogmas, teachings and traditions of our faith since time immemorial, we have come to believe that Mary had been set aside by God for this singular vocation. Thus, she herself was conceived in the womb of her mother without any taint of original sin.
Mary is the new Ark of the Covenant, bearing within her the new covenant of God established by Jesus Christ, her son, whom she carried within her womb for nine months. But this singular grace did not elevate her to the state of divinity, as is often misunderstood by those who don’t share our faith and understanding. She is the greatest among all the saints not because she is the one closest to the throne of her son in heaven, but also because of her very own exemplary life, filled with love for God, and with devotion to her son, following him throughout his life even to the foot of the cross.
We honour Mary, because we honour her Son and worship him as our God and King, as in the olden days when the mother of a king was highly regarded and respected, by virtue of having borne the king and taken care of him until he came of age and was capable of taking over and exercising his own authority as a king. Mary was born as a shrine for the creator, and through her obedience she fulfilled the purpose for which she was born. As God had a plan for Mary, our birth too was no mistake or accident. God has a plan for us. As Mary fulfilled her purpose on earth, we need to discover the purpose of our life and be faithful to it. We need also to respect the lives of others, for God has a plan for them too!
Response: I will greatly rejoice in the Lord.
