Memorial of Saint John Chrysostom, Bishop & Doctor

1 Tim 2: 1-8;       Ps 28: 2, 7-9;       Lk 7: 1-10

A Roman centurion was the head of around a hundred soldiers and had the authority to command them. Such a Centurion is seen in the gospel today humblings himself before Jesus. However, we can be faced with a question: Why did the centurion not go personally to meet Jesus and instead, send some Jewish elders to request for the healing of his servant? The centurion himself answers us: “Lord, for this reason I did not presume to come to you myself; but give the word and let my servant be cured.” The centurion possessed the virtue of faith and believed that Jesus could perform the miracle, if he so wished, by his will alone.

When the Centurion was told that Jesus was coming to his house, he sends a second messenger to ask him not to come, with the message: “Lord, I do not are worthy to have you come under my roof … but say the word and my servant will be healed.” Faith led him to believe that no distance could prevent or restrain Christ to heal his servant. We require such faith. There are occasions when we are tempted to believe that Jesus is far away and that he does not listen to us. However, faith enlightens our minds and hearts, assuring us that Jesus is always near to help us. Faith illumines our minds to help us see the presence of Jesus in our midst.

The saving presence of Jesus in the Eucharist must be our permanent testimony that he is always close to us. St Augustine, moved by faith in this reality, said; “What you see is the bread and the chalice; that is what your own eyes report to you. But what your faith obliges you to accept is that the bread is the body of Christ and the chalice is the blood of Christ.” Let us therefore, allow Jesus to penetrate our homes and our hearts, to heal and strengthen our faith, heal us and lead us towards eternal life.

Response: Blest be the Lord, for he has heard the sound of my appeal.
