A RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR GUARDIAN ANGEL
We all have an angel with us, who guards us. In the first reading, God promises Israel an angel to guard them and to bring them to the place he had prepared for them. Life is a journey, along which we are helped by “companions,” “protectors,” “compasses” who guard us against dangers, and from snares, we might encounter along the way. This is one of the roles of the guardian angels. They accompany us on our journey of faith, guarding us against evil and leading us towards our final destination. Since this is their role in our lives, we need to develop a relationship with them.
In the gospel, Jesus declares that the angels of children are continually in the presence of God. Hence, the second role of the angels is to be in the presence of God interceding for us. The disciples have a selfish question: ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ To cut across this unhealthy preoccupation, Jesus sets a child in front of them, declaring, ‘the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven’.
What does Jesus see as great in little children? It is their natural tendency to be open and receptive to others, their instinctive awareness of their dependence on others. It is what Jesus refers to elsewhere in the gospels as meekness. This is the attitude we need towards God, and towards the messengers, God sends us, the angels. We must ask the Lord for the grace of this meekness, to listen to the voice of this companion who is a sign of God’s love for us.
How is our relationship with our guardian angel? Do we listen to them? Do we speak with them? Do we ask for their guidance, especially in moments of trial and temptation?? We need to develop a relationship with our guardian angel, our constant companion on earth, and our faithful intercessor in heaven.
Response: For you has he commanded his angels, to keep you in all your ways.
