PERSEVERANCE AND TRUST IN PRAYER

We are all too familiar with the discomfort of being forced to rise from bed when we have just settled in for a good night’s rest after a tiresome day’s work. We can all understand therefore the hesitancy of the man of the house when his friend knocks at his door asking him for bread. That knock on the door in the middle of the night was an unwelcome one. But the determined borrower knocked on with persistence until the householder, knowing that, that knock would disturb all in the house, made the sacrifice of rising and giving the friend what he wanted.

The primary message of this parable is to be persistent in prayer. Yet, it doesn’t encourage us to batter at God’s door until we finally compel him out of weariness to give us what we want. Instead, it counsels us to go to the one who knows our needs better than we do, and whose heart towards us is generous love. If we do not receive what we pray for, it is not because God grudgingly refuses to give it but because he has something better in store for us. There is no such thing as an unheard prayer or even an unanswered one. God’s answer may not be the answer we desired or expected, but even when it is a refusal it is an answer born of divine love and wisdom.

If an unwilling householder could respond to his friend’s persistence, how much more will God who is a loving Father supply all his children’s needs? This does not mean we take his love for granted and slack in prayer. After all, we can guarantee the reality and sincerity of our desire only by the passion with which we pray. Pray therefore with persistence, with passion, with hope, but primarily with trust in love and wisdom of God. On the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, let us become frequent in my prayer like Mary. May the mysteries that we meditate upon during my daily rosary help us to know and surrender to the will of God like Jesus and Mary

Response: Blessed the man who has placed his trust in the Lord.
