THE PATH WE CHOOSE MATTERS

In the gospel of today, we encounter a rich man who longs for eternal life. He has set his destination right, but the masts are placed against the wrong winds. He seems to be attached to his many possessions, and to some extent clung on to them. Little did he realise that the journey to eternal life calls one to travel light, peeling off all the unnecessary layers of earthly attachments and walking in the light of faith, which is the pre-requisite even for starting this journey towards the beatific vision. Christ, with love for him, communicated to him the changes he needed to make. He received the calling to disavow his earthly treasures and embrace his faith, and to plunge into the unknown along with the Master.

‘There can be no reaching God without faith.’ This was a truth known by the Christian mystics down the centuries. However, this faith bears severe testing just like gold that is forged in fire. History bears witness to the sufferings men went through to safeguard their faith. St Peter wrote that the genuineness of one’s faith shall be tested through trials, and this young man of the gospel wasn’t yet ready for such a test of his faith, for he possessed little of it and placed his entire trust on his wealth.

The question that we face today is whether we resemble the rich young man. Even though we harbour the best of intentions, if the path we choose is wrong, it might not lead us to our destination. Similarly, if we place our trust in material goods, they will end up as Jesus predicts; “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth. and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal” (Mt 6:19). Let us strive to walk instead in the light of faith in God’s mercy. As Peter reminds us today, the goal of our faith is the salvation of our souls, which Jesus has won for us on the cross.

Response: The Lord keeps his covenant ever in mind.
