Today’s Gospel teaches us how we can grow in the ‘kingdom character’ proclaimed by Jesus.

  • We Must Pray for it: Christ teaches that believers must ask, seek, and knock, and only then will they receive. This is obviously a call to prayer. Christ spent considerable time in prayer. He also taught his disciples the Lord’s Prayer, which is the believer’s pattern of prayer. The fact that he returns to it shows how important prayer must be for kingdom citizens. It has often been said that prayer for the believer is like oxygen. It sustains and nourishes our spiritual life.

  • We Must Pray Persistently: This means that Christ is not only commanding us to pray to grow in the kingdom character, but to pray persistently. It is one thing to pray occasionally for the grace to share the Gospel, to stop using foul language, etc. It is another to pray for those things constantly. To pray persistently show that we desperately desire righteousness, and God rewards that type of fervour.

  • We Must Pray in Faith: Without faith, it is impossible to please God, for the one who approaches him must believe that he exists, that he loves us and that he rewards those who seek him.

  • We Must Imitate God’s Loving Nature: In everything, treat others as you would want them to treat you, for this fulfils the law and the prophets. Christ gives us what has often been called the ‘Golden Rule.’ We must treat others as we would want them to treat us. Therefore, to be imitators of God and to grow in the kingdom character we must participate in the loving nature of God. We must love like God. We must forgive others like God forgives us. We must serve others like God serves us. To grow in kingdom righteousness, we must imitate God by seeking to know him more through meditation on his word and obedience to his commandments.

Response: On the day I called, you answered me, O Lord.
