FOOD FOR ETERNAL LIFE

We have two beautiful stories in the liturgy today, both reflecting one strong truth. Philip was drawn to his next mission by an angel of God. How did he recognize this commission? What gave him the strength to obey? We see the answer to these questions in the Gospel of John, where Jesus says that no one can do God’s work unless they have been chosen, called and appointed by the heavenly Father. The narrative has the following storyline to offer – a beginning, a journey and an end.

This journey commences with the hearkening of a heavenly host – a call, a deep longing and an instruction. A lot of good is to follow, but that depends on one’s response to that calling. The walk of man, when constantly guided by God’s Holy Spirit is made worthwhile. All things he sets out to do are accomplished. This is because he is not just doing his own will, but that of his Father. Just like a hungry child, longing for food at the kitchen table, each of us longs for spiritual food. We find ourselves filled when we move in the direction of his Spirit. We discover places we have never imagined. We do things beyond our understanding, all for the holy purpose of evangelization!

Philip obeyed his call and we saw the miracles that unfolded consequently. Because he said yes, he identified the eunuch. When we obey God’s voice, we find those people that need ministering to. There are people pre-committed to our care by God. Losing communion with God puts us at great risk of losing our purpose and those commissioned to our care. Through the course of life, we find that when we walk in the light of the Holy Spirit, we encounter Jesus. Jesus is the food – the manna, the living bread, our source of well-being. Anyone who partakes of Jesus cannot be the same again. This brings us to the end, our heavenly reward, which is eternal life.

Response: Cry out with joy to God, all the earth.
