TO WHOM SHALL WE GO, LORD?

At many places in the gospel, we come across the crowds following Jesus. But in today’s gospel passage, we find many people walking away from Jesus, because they find his teaching about the ‘Bread of Life’ intolerable and unacceptable. Some of them went on to plot his death. This is what happens if people do not have faith. We need faith in order to understand and accept the message of salvation. Nevertheless, Peter and the other apostles stood by Jesus. It is because they believed in him, even when they did not understand fully what he was saying.

To be like the apostles, we must cleanse our thoughts, preconceived ideas and rationalizations. In this way, we free ourselves to nurture our heart and mind as a fertile ground where the Word can be sown, to grow and bear fruit. Otherwise, we will be like those followers of Jesus, who distanced themselves from him when what he taught did not align with their ideas and understanding. Indeed, many teachings of Jesus are difficult to accept, especially when they affect the people and things we hold dear. Because of this difficulty, many become ‘part-time believers’, or worse, ‘full-time unbelievers’. They do not like that Jesus interferes with their worldly plans and endeavours.

Jesus has the words of eternal life. If we want to have eternal life, let us listen to him wholeheartedly, without any reservation. Yet we cannot go to him unless the Father leads us, for faith and understanding are gifts from above. Let us pray then, that our Father in heaven grant us a welcoming and faithful heart, and that Jesus may become the King of our life. Today Jesus is asking each one of us: “What about you? Do you want to go away too?” May our hearts echo now and forever, the response of Peter: “To whom shall we go, Lord? You have the words of eternal life.”

Response: How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me?
