SEEK TRUE TREASURE WITH YOUR HEART

The liturgy of the word today can be is divided into two parts: in the first part, Jesus invites us to lay up treasures in heaven, not on earth. In the second, it talks about the eye as a lamp. As the external eyes look at reality outside, so the internal eyes see inner realities. Thus, we are invited to introspect on our inner self.

Let us look around us. Everyone is running to get something. It could be money, things, name or fame. Each one tries to look outside of oneself. The world outside presents itself so well that one believes that real joy and satisfaction is outside us. Fr Henri Nouwen tells us, “We can be preoccupied with being occupied. We get too busy, on the go all the time, and this brings exhaustion without, and fragmentation within. This results in a disconnection, with self, community, church, God leading to a vague discontent, stagnation in our lives, a resigned acceptance preventing us from actively seeking new discoveries of God.”

In our pursuit for happiness and pleasure, one tries hard to amass material wealth. There is more DOING in this worldly gain and less BEING and BECOMING. The words of Jesus open our inner eyes to look for heavenly treasures. It is a call TO BE and TO BECOME, a call to be TRANSFORMED, not PERFORM only in life. Let us then store up treasures in heaven not just by DOING good works. Our focus must move from DOING to BEING. It is like the metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly, we must enter our heart, our chrysalis or cocoon and introspect our relationship with God and people and work for our transformation. The Butterfly can now fly and can enjoy the nectar of the flowers, while the caterpillar, can only remain on ground among the dead and waste, all the time eating. Let us burn the lamps of our inner eyes and see where is my real treasure? Is it outside of me or within me? Let us discern and choose TO BE than TO DO.

Response: The Lord has chosen Sion; he has desired it for his dwelling.
