HOW TO OVERCOME THE WORLD

All of us have the innate capacity to fight, overcome and win. It all depends on when we realise this, how we use this and for what we use this. Another question that remains a puzzle or rather a mystery always is – what is it that I want to overcome? What is the real fight in life? What is that victory? Today’s first reading begins with a question? Who can overcome the world? Only the one who believes in Jesus Christ is the Son of God. In the Gospel, John the Baptist puts the same concept further in some other words saying, “I am not worthy to untie his shoes.” Both the readings testify that the Baptism given by Jesus is something different than what it was originally thought of. His baptism is not only of the water, but of water and blood and as we hear in the gospel it is of the Holy Spirit.

Saint John of the cross, presents three enemies in our spiritual journey, and one of them is the World. He puts forth three precautions to be followed against the enemy of the world:

  1. One should have an equal love and an equal forgetfulness of all (persons, things, events). Do not love one person more than the other, he says. The baptism that Jesus gives is of the Truth. Can anything be truer than God Himself.
  2. One should abhor all manner of possession and have no concern for the goods of the world. Neither for food, nor for clothing, or for any other created thing, nor for tomorrow, and direct this care to something higher – to seeking the kingdom of God.
  3. Guarding oneself against thinking about what happens around and speaking about it. If we keep on thinking of what is happening around us we will not have time to think of God. We are called to believe in the Lord and look up to heaven and when we fail in this, as the readings say, we make God a liar.

Let us ponder on these precautions of Saint John of the Cross and gain wisdom to overcome the world.

Response: O Jerusalem, glorify the Lord!
