WHAT IS TRUTH?
Uriyadi / Dahi Hundi is an Indian game, where a pot is hung at a distance from a person who is blindfolded and given a stick with which he/she has to hit the pot. Though before tying the blindfold the person can see the pot, on blindfolding, the person fails to hit the pot. That is truth, what is visible is truth or reality but when blindfolded the truth could not be seen or detected. Similarly, in our spiritual life also. Jesus’ teaching ‘love of God and love of neighbour, the golden rule of Christianity is very clear, very visible and very much known. It is an open truth that one who follows and practices this golden truth is the child of God and the true disciple of Jesus. But many things of this world and our selfish desires of the flesh and of ego blindfold our understanding and knowledge and even our determination and the truth disappear from our sight.
In the first reading Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego did not allow themselves to be blindfolded by the sweet promises of king Nebuchadnezzar neither they were blindfolded by the threats of the king. They solely trusted the truth that their God, whom they served, is able to deliver them from the fiery furnace and will deliver them out of his hand. As a consequence, we see how, in the end, the king himself found the truth and praised God saying: “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego”. Jesus told his opponents if they were really children of Abraham, they would not have tried to kill him; because Abraham did the will be God and always walked in God’s ways, if they are Abraham’s children they would do as Abraham did. And that is the simple truth. We need to walk in God’s ways always to prove ourselves as God’s children. During lent let us try our best to be true to the truth and prove ourselves in loving God and our neighbour.
