SATURDAY, FOURTH WEEK OF EASTER
Acts 13: 44-52; Ps 98: 1-4; Jn 14: 7-14
ANOTHER BLESSED FAULT
O Felix Culpa! Oh, happy fault! I think we are familiar with this phrase by now. We are quite fresh with these words as we heard them recently in the Exultet, the paschal proclamation during the Easter Vigil. It reads, O happy fault, that merited such and so great a Redeemer! It speaks of the sin of Adam which in a way invited Christ to the earth and allowed us to have the redeemer.
I am reminded of this expression as I read through the first reading of today. Paul says, “We had to proclaim the word of God to you first and because you rejected it, we must turn to the pagans.” Very interesting. Another blessed fault by the Israelites. If they had accepted the word of God and thought of themselves as worthy of eternal life, I think, all of us would not have the opportunity to savour the sweetness of the Saviour. Their fault became a blessing for the whole nation.
The word of God will not return to where it came from unless and until it fulfils its purpose (Is 55:11). Jesus, the word, would never return to the Father without accomplishing his mission. He said, “My food is to do the will of my Father” (Jn 4:14). He completed the mission when he exclaimed, “It is consummated” (Jn 19:30). It was an expression of accomplishment. We should also remember here the parable of the wedding guests. When the invitees rejected the offer, the red carpet of roses was laid for anyone and everyone.
Jesus is the universal saviour. God sent his only son so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. What makes us worthy of eternal life is not our birth in a particular race, but our belief in Him who was sent. They rejected it and we were invited. Let us not become the next in line to reject the Lord. Let us accept Him as our Saviour, believe in Him, and become worthy of the eternal life that is on offer.
Response: All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
