WISDOM AND LOVE
In today’s Gospel, Jesus addresses the Pharisees’ question about divorce. He reaffirms the sanctity of marriage, quoting from Genesis, ‘For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ Jesus emphasizes the indissoluble bond of marriage and condemns divorce except in cases of infidelity, highlighting the importance of commitment and fidelity in relationships.
Furthermore, Jesus introduces the concept of celibacy for the sake of the kingdom of heaven, stating that some are eunuchs by birth, while others choose celibacy for the sake of the kingdom. This teaching challenges societal norms and emphasizes the higher calling of dedicating oneself wholly to God’s work.
Reflecting on these passages, several key themes emerge:
Spiritual Discernment: Jesus emphasizes the importance of discerning spiritual truths and signs, urging believers to look beyond the superficial and perceive the deeper workings of God in their lives and in the world.
Sacredness of Marriage: Jesus reaffirms the sacred bond of marriage and condemns divorce, emphasizing the importance of commitment, fidelity, and mutual respect in marital relationships.
Call to Holiness: Jesus introduces the concept of celibacy for the sake of the kingdom, highlighting the radical call to dedicate one’s life entirely to God’s service, whether through marriage or celibacy.
In today’s world, where materialism, individualism, and moral relativism abound, these teachings offer profound insights and challenges for believers. They call us to cultivate spiritual discernment, honour the sanctity of marriage, and discern our vocational calling in light of God’s kingdom.
Response: Your anger turned away and you comforted me.
