Ezekiel 37:1-14 – So Much Bible!

FRIDAY, TWENTIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Ez 37: 1-14                 Ps 107: 2-9                  Mt 22: 34-40

THE RESTORATIVE POWER OF GOD

Today’s first reading profoundly and symbolically carries a message of hope, restoration, and the power of God’s divine intervention. The image of a valley filled with dry bones is a powerful metaphor for the human condition when we are spiritually dry and lifeless. It reminds us that even in our lowest moments, God’s hand can reach us. God asks Ezekiel, “Son of man, can these bones live?” It serves as a reminder that God’s power surpasses human understanding. In our moments of despair, we often question whether there is any hope for revival. God alone knows the potential for transformation, and this question prompts us to trust in His unfathomable abilities.

God instructs Ezekiel to prophesy to the dry bones and to breathe on them signifying the importance of speaking life into seemingly lifeless situations. It reminds us that we have a role in our own spiritual revival and in the revival of others. Through prayer, faith, and action, we can participate in the process of restoration. As Ezekiel prophesies, a remarkable transformation occurs. Bones come together, tendons, flesh, and skin appear, and ultimately, breath enters the lifeless bodies. This miracle is a testament to God’s power to bring life from death, to renew what seems beyond repair. It is a message of hope that encourages us to believe in the possibility of personal and societal renewal.

In the historical context, this passage addresses the exile and eventual return of the people of Israel to their homeland. It symbolizes God’s promise to restore the nation, despite their dire circumstances. It teaches us that God is faithful to His promises and will not abandon His people, no matter how bleak the situation. It emphasizes the need for a deep and abiding connection with God to experience true life and vitality.

Response: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good; for his mercy endures forever!
