THE GOOD NEWS OF GOD’S CHOICE

“God always gives his best to those who leave the choice with Him,” says the great American missionary Philip James Elliot. The liturgy of the day highlights this very important aspect of our Christian faith, the Good News of God’s choice.

Saint Paul instructs us today, that God does things according to His provision. He does not depend on nobility or might to accomplish His purposes. He uses frail instruments to carry out His ends. According to His own beautiful ways He chooses and fulfils, that is, to win people for Christ His Son, who alone can offer salvation. Even the initiative is from God, therefore, as St Paul rightly says there is no place for human pride. The apostle reminds us time and again, that Jesus alone is the wisdom of God and our boasts solely rest in Him.

The Lord demonstrates His wisdom in the gospel. The talents given to the servants in today’s parable are not momentary gifts or personal capacities. They are in fact the share in the mercy of God. It has to do with one’s own participation in the Divine Love of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. This particular grace will increase as and when one increases in Charity. The choice of this grace and its amount is always decided by God and we are to discern to bring it to fulfilment.

Yet again we are not left to ourselves but as the apostle Paul would say, we rather die to self and allow the works to be carried out by Jesus Himself present in us. Let our prayer today be that God makes use of us as a paintbrush to draw His wonderful art of Life in its sheer and pure goodness, thus brightening the life of our fellow brothers and sisters, the co sharers of Divine Grace. May the Holy Spirit lead us to be an effective instrument to channel God’s gift of Grace, according to His own Choice and Purpose.

Response: Blessed the people the Lord has chosen as his heritage.
