THE CIRCLE OF LIFE

There was this famous movie ‘The Lion King’ It was about the life of this lion king – his victories and struggles. And eventually after his death, his son would take over the kingdom and the circle of life would continue. It reminds us that all creatures go through a certain circle of life from birth to death. We have our struggles of growing up, finding success and then with age we just have to fade away. For the present form of this world is passing away but God does not change (1 Cor 7:31). Man being a spiritual being also has his inner conflicts to deal with when confronted with worldly affairs. In today’s daily scripture Saint Paul gives us a formula: ‘Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not seek marriage.’ Commitments are very important to us and God as well. We just can’t live a wasted life. We need a deeper sense of living.

In today’s gospel, Luke reminds us of the beatitudes given by Jesus to live our Christian lives. A meaningful and fruitful life. We have been sent with a purpose and to fulfil this purpose we need our saviour. If we live a life of blessings we can be a blessing to others with love, humility and kindness as taught in the beatitudes. The beatitudes teach us the final end to which God calls us: The Kingdom, the vision of God, participation in the divine nature, eternal life, filiation, and rest in God. (CCC 1726) The beatitude of eternal life is the gratuitous gift of God. It is supernatural, as is the grace that leads us there. (CCC 1727)

Let’s take time today to reflect on our purpose of living. For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of food and drink but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. (Rom 14:17) Let our circle of life and that of our children and the generations to follow be blessed by serving Christ who alone can give us an abundant life.

Response: Listen, O daughter; pay heed and give ear.
