GIFTS TO EDIFY CHRIST’S MYSTICAL BODY

In his letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul beautifully illustrates the reality of our unity in Christ, likening us to the parts of a single body. Just as a body is one yet has many parts, so too are we diverse in our gifts and roles within the Church. Through our baptism into Christ, each of us is bestowed with unique gifts from the Holy Spirit. These gifts are manifold: some are called to be apostles, others teachers, healers, or administrators. However, they are not given for personal acclaim but for the common good and for the edification of Christ’s body, the Church. Some among us console the sorrowful with compassion, others impart wisdom and understanding through their teachings, while still others serve diligently in unseen ways. Each gift is indispensable, and every member is essential in the tapestry of our communal life.

Yet, Saint Paul’s message also emphasizes the essentiality of unity amidst our diversity. Just as an eye cannot say to a hand, “I have no need of you,” so too must we honour and appreciate the varied gifts and roles of others. Humility and mutual respect are crucial virtues as we journey together in faith. We are called to recognize and celebrate the unique contributions of each member, understanding that all these gifts emanate from the same Holy Spirit who unites us in Christ. With hearts overflowing with gratitude, let us discern and diligently employ our gifts for the greater glory of God and in service to His people. Let us fervently pray for the grace to build up rather than tear down, to encourage rather than criticize, and to work harmoniously as one body, united in a common faith, unwavering hope, and fervent love.

May the Holy Spirit, who gives these gifts according to His divine will and purpose, continually guide and strengthen us as we proclaim the Gospel and earnestly labour to build the Kingdom of God here on earth.

Response: We are his people, the sheep of his flock.
