FAITH BEYOND MATERIAL GAIN OR LOSS

Despite bearing a multitude of losses, Job still harbours a deep affection for the Lord. The Gospel projects the apostles’ aspiration to secure positions within Jesus’ kingdom, seemingly motivated by their affection, which explains their attempt to prove their own greatness before others. Their aspirations seem to lean towards expecting benefits from the Lord. The request made by the sons of Zebedee (Mt 20:20-28) serves as an illustration of how the human psyche navigates the complexities of expectations and desires for influential roles in life. Jesus tenderly lifts up a child, imparting a profound lesson to His disciples about the significance of humility, emphasizing that the ‘least’ in society hold a greater stature in the eyes of God. Today’s gospel is a poignant reminder urging us not to vie for material gains but to earnestly seek opportunities to serve the Lord!

Reflecting on the unassuming love of a child towards its parents, we draw parallels to the story of Job, who maintains his devotion to the Lord despite enduring significant losses – his possessions, livestock, and his beloved children. Job’s unwavering commitment serves as a resounding testament to his faith, which transcends mere material blessings or the anticipation of future rewards. This steadfastness starkly contradicts the accusations levelled against Job by Satan in the first reading. Thus, Job emerges as an excellent example for each of us, urging us not merely to seek favours and material blessings from God, but to earnestly prioritize the pursuit of God’s Kingdom in every facet of our lives. Though we may not yield abundant material prosperity like Job, our faith assures us that God, recognizing our love and unwavering trust in Him, will always safeguard us. Then, the divine promise echoed in – ‘Seek first the Kingdom of God, and all else will be added unto you’ – shall manifest in the fabric of our existence.

Response: Lord, turn your ear to me; hear my words.
