Memorial of the Guardian Angels

NOT JUST PROTECTORS, BUT OUR FRIENDS
As Catholics, we implore the protection and guidance of our Guardian Angels. There are numerous instances when many people have recounted how they felt a strong sense of guidance or intuition and thus have changed their plans at the last minute. Children have also attributed the feeling of being protected at night or when they are alone or scared. Guardian Angels are our celestial protectors and today is the day to thank them!
In the first reading today, the Lord manifests his presence through the angel who would guard the Israelites on their way. The Israelites are asked to be obedient to the Angel, as obedience to God. In the Gospel, Jesus indicates that every child has an angel who beholds the face of the Heavenly Father thus proving the existence and care of angels for each individual person. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 336) tells us that Guardian Angels surround us from infancy to death with their watchful care and intercession. They stand beside each of us as our protector and shepherd. The Church considers them as someone who take an active part in our lives not just protecting us but also interceding for us.
The Church today asks all of us to cultivate a relationship with our guardian angel through prayer and devotion. By direct invocation to them, by prayers and by integrating and acknowledging their presence in our daily lives are the means of developing a deeper relationship with them. Guardian angels are a beautiful expression of God’s love for us. They move us to the good, reinforce God’s commands, illuminate the truth, strengthen our minds, influence our wills and bring us closer to God! They are much more than just our bodyguards. They are our friends – true friends who motivate us every day to walk one step at a time towards God!
