HUMILITY AND SERVICE IN A SELF-CENTRED WORLD

In today’s reading from Philippians, Saint Paul urges us to have a mindset of humility, considering the needs of others above our own. He reminds us of Christ’s own selflessness, who “emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in human likeness” (Phil 2:7). This call to humility echoes with the Gospel passage, where Jesus instructs his host not to invite those who will return the favour, but to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.

In the present scenario, where competition and self promotion are often praised, Saint Paul’s message is a refreshing challenge. We are barraged with messages that tell us to prioritize our own success and happiness. Social media feeds overflow with carefully curated images of perfect lives. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison and self-absorption. However, true fulfillment comes not from self-importance, but from following Christ’s example of humility.

Consider the countless individuals who dedicate their lives to serving others – doctors, nurses, teachers, social workers, and volunteers. Their acts of service, big or small, uplift those in need and create a more just and compassionate world. We can all strive to embody this spirit in our daily lives. Perhaps it’s offering a helping hand to a struggling neighbor, volunteering at a local soup kitchen, or simply listening with empathy to a friend in need. These seemingly small gestures, inspired by Christ’s humility, can have a profound impact on all around us.

By cultivating a spirit of humility and service, we not only enrich the lives of others, but also discover a deeper sense of purpose and connection within ourselves. As we move through the world with open hearts and a willingness to serve, we create ripples of kindness that can transform our communities and the world around us.

Response: Keep my soul in peace at your side, O Lord.
