WISDOM FOR OUR DAILY LIVES

In the letter to Titus, St Paul asks Titus to teach what is reliable with sound doctrine. He desires that Titus teaches the Gospel and include qualities like temperance, respect, self-control, faith, love, and endurance, thus have the mind of Christ (Phil 2:5). He mentions the basic Christian virtues of faith, love and endurance. In 1 Thess 1:3 and 2 Thess 3:5 Paul refers to endurance as the steadfastness of hope and the steadfastness of Christ. In 1 Cor 13:7 he refers to love which bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. The love is Jesus’ gift to us i.e., a sharing in his communion with his Father.

Paul also offers guidance which is age specific. He encourages elderly men to exhibit these virtues. He encourages elderly women to live reverently, avoid slander and addiction and to teach what is good. He asks young women to love their families, be self-controlled and kind. He urges young men to exercise self-control. The aim is to live in a way that honours God, His word and His values. Paul reminds us that God’s grace has appeared, offering salvation to all. It teaches us to reject ungodliness and live our lives in right relation with God cosmos-man, always desiring to do good.

The Responsorial Psalm invites us to meditate on trusting the Lord and living righteously. He encourages us to “find your delight in the Lord, he will grant you your heart’s desire.” The psalmist reminds us that God’s promises are sure and our actions do matter in God’s eyes.

The gospel pericope of today invites us to practise humility, service and obedience. Luke reminds us that while we fulfil our duties, we remain servants. We do not earn any special privileges by our obedience. It is all God’s grace and we have not earned anything by our own merit.

Response: From the Lord comes the salvation of the just.
