Luke 24:13-35 Reflection, Meaning, and Prayer

WEDNESDAY, EASTER OCTAVE

Acts 3: 1-10                Ps 105: 1-4, 6-9                      Lk 24: 13-35

A TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY

The first reading recounts the healing of a crippled man through Peter and John, by the power and name of Jesus Christ. The man, who sat daily outside the temple to beg for alms, was healed and entered the temple with Peter and John, walking, leaping and praising God. The apostles’ faith in the power of Jesus brought about this miraculous healing. This story challenges us to reflect: Are we aware of our own calling to bring healing to others through our prayers and by welcoming them into the community of faith?

In the Gospel, we encounter the disciples on the road to Emmaus. They were among those who were filled with astonishment, confusion, and shock over the events that had unfolded in Jerusalem and on Calvary. Jesus joins them as a traveling companion and engages them in dialogue. They however, do not recognize Him. Despite the reports from the women and their companions, they remained unconvinced. It is the Lord Himself who could open their hearts to understanding. He guided them to revisit the Scriptures; i.e., Moses and the prophets, and to interpret them in light of their experience with Him. “Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and then enter into His glory?” It was when they grasped the role of suffering in life of Jesus that their hearts were set ablaze. This is the fire Jesus longed to ignite in the world.

Secondly, they recognized Him in the breaking of the bread, but He vanished from their sight. They had finally seen Him, with the eyes of faith. Filled with newfound understanding, they returned to Jerusalem to share their experience of the Risen Lord with others. This raises a question for us: How do we share our faith with those around us? Like the disciples, we too are entrusted with the mission of sharing the Good News, that the light of Christ may keep shining brightly in the world.

Response: Let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice.
