BE OPEN TO BE REBORN

Today’s Gospel passage continues Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus. He uses the analogy of the wind. Just as we cannot see the wind but hear its sound and observe its effects, so it is with being born of the Spirit. We may not see the moment of spiritual rebirth, but we can witness its transformative effects in our lives. While we may not fully understand the workings of the Holy Spirit, we can undoubtedly experience His presence and power.

Nicodemus’s struggle to comprehend this teaching offers us insight into why the Pharisees often failed to understand Jesus and the new work He was doing among them. Jesus gently challenges Nicodemus, pointing out that as a teacher of Israel, he should recognize that God is doing something new. This new work involves a spiritual rebirth, and the building of a new people. The old covenant, though sacred, is insufficient for attaining eternal life. No one can earn salvation merely by keeping the commandments. God must do a new thing, and this is precisely why Jesus came. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus opens the way to heaven. As the Son of Man who descended from heaven, He alone can lead us back to it.

The psalm beautifully complements this message by proclaiming the everlasting reign of Jesus Christ as King. This King not only rules with power and majesty but also offers us new life in Him, a life that extends into eternity. The psalmist invites us to approach the Lord with our questions, doubts, and struggles. He promises never to turn us away. The same King who reigns eternally is also the Good Shepherd, tenderly guiding and caring for His flock. In Him, we are made new creations, transformed by His grace and love. Let us come to the Good Shepherd with open hearts, ready to be reborn and to live as His new creation, confident in His promise of eternal life.

Response: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed.
