BAD EXAMPLE – GOOD LESSON

Today’s Gospel presents the parable of the shrewd manager. A wealthy man entrusts his property to a steward, relying on him completely to handle his affairs. The steward, seeing that his master does not involve himself in daily matters, begins to misuse his position and squander his master’s wealth. When the master discovers this, the steward realizes he is about to lose everything: his position, reputation, and livelihood. Out of fear, he devises a plan: he reduces the debts of his master’s debtors so that, when he is dismissed, they will welcome him into their homes. Surprisingly, the master praises this steward; but not for his dishonesty, but for his shrewdness.

This conclusion is shocking, and it captures the attention of Jesus’ disciples. Why would Jesus make such a man the “hero” of His story? The point lies in the contrast: if a worldly person can be so clever in securing temporary, earthly security, then how much more should the children of light use wisdom, determination, and creativity to secure eternal treasure. As Jesus reminds us, “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

The challenge for us is clear: we are constantly tempted to live for worldly treasures – money, power, influence. Money itself is not evil, but when it becomes our master, it turns us away from God. We cannot serve both God and wealth. The Pharisees in the Gospel disliked Jesus precisely because, as the text says, they were lovers of money. They used God’s name for their own gain, missing the true spirit of faith. In contrast, the first reading today shows St. Paul commending the Romans for walking as children of the light. Paul himself could boast of being a faithful follower of the Gospel; not in pride, but as an encouragement for others to remain steadfast.

This parable challenges us to examine our own hearts: Where is my treasure? What am I striving for most eagerly? Like the shrewd manager, we too are called to act decisively and wisely – but not for worldly gain. Instead, we must use all our energy, creativity, and determination to secure the lasting treasure of God’s Kingdom.

Response: The Lord has shown his deliverance to the nations.
