STEWARDS OF GRACE, SERVANTS OF LOVE

St. Paul, at the close of his letter, pauses to remember with affection those who walked alongside him in his mission. He greets Prisca and Aquila, faithful companions who shared not only his trade but also his heart for Christ. Their home became a gathering place for the community, a small church alive with prayer and fellowship. Through this we are reminded: faith is not lived in isolation but in communion, and often, it flourishes most beautifully in the ordinary spaces of our daily lives.

Paul’s gratitude extends to many others who supported and even risked their lives for the sake of the Gospel. His spirit of thanksgiving invites us to ask: Who are the people that sustain our faith journey? Do we recognize and bless them for the quiet ways they help us grow in love for Christ? Paul then turns all praise to God, praying that the community in Rome may remain strong in faith and deeply rooted in the teaching of Christ. This closing prayer becomes ours too—a desire to be strengthened so that our lives bear witness to the Good News.

In the gospel Jesus says; if you can trust a man in little things, you can trust him with greater things too. In other words, if we can be trusted with our material goods, to use them to build the Kingdom, then we prove ourselves trustworthy with something much greater. Material goods that come into our lives do not belong entirely to us. Everything that God has created belongs to all. We are only stewards of what has come into our possession and we will be judged on how we make use of it. On hearing all this, the Pharisees mock Jesus for his out-of-the world statements. Perhaps all of us would do the same today. Yet Jesus makes an important point. We cannot be slaves of both God and money, as the spiritual will not flourish when the material dominates our hearts and mind. Following Jesus is a lifelong journey of total devotion, selfless commitment, and unconditional love. Let us turn our hearts to a path of committed undivided love towards Jesus.

Response: I will bless your name forever, my king and my God.
