GOD’S THOUGHTS

Sometimes when we sit to pray and do not really know what to pray, we just have to say, Lord you know everything. And thereafter be seated silently in the presence of God. At times this silent rest is just what we need. The great Carmelite saint of silence, namely, St. Elizabeth of the Trinity had her famous prayer when she prayed for others – Lord the one you love is sick. These few words were enough for her to understand God’s thoughts towards her concerns. She further states that Prayer is a rest, a relaxation, we must look at him all the time, we must keep silent; it is so simple.

In today’s liturgy we are able to understand the prayer of the psalmist in Psalm 139. King David the author of this Psalm expresses God’s thoughts concerning himself. God is presented as the All-knowing and Ever-present God. It is no small great encouragement for us to realise that God knows each one of us so intimately. How precious are his thoughts about us. And since we cannot hide anything from him, we might as well live a holy life that pleases him. Wisdom 1:6 exhorts us God observes our heart and hears our tongue. When we are in constant watch by our creator must we not keep a check on our unruly life? Not just because God is watching, but more so because, he cares about us! Like the Psalmist let us become aware that God’s prevailing presence brings great comfort. We must surrender our thoughts to him and ask for the grace to do his will. St. Paul exhorts us in 1 Cor 2:16, “We have the mind of Christ” and in Col 3:2 he urges us saying, “Set your mind on the things that are above.”

Jesus came into this world to show us the face of The Father. By his very sacrifice, He revealed to us the loving and merciful heart of Our Heavenly Father. The awareness that Our Heavenly Father is All-knowing and that we are always in the presence of such a loving father should fill us with his peace and love.

Response: Lead me, Lord, in the way everlasting.
