TRUE LEADERSHIP SET ON GOD

The readings today present two contrasting lives—King David, the anointed one after God’s own heart, and King Herod, a ruler trapped by pride and fear. Both wielded power, but their hearts revealed where true greatness lies. Sirach celebrates David as the chosen shepherd of Israel. Despite his human frailty, David’s heart was set on God. He sang hymns to glorify the Lord, united his people in worship, and sought forgiveness when he sinned. His life was rooted in repentance and praise. He knew that leadership without humility and dependence on God would crumble. David’s greatness came from his surrender and not from his throne. In contrast, we see the tragic picture of Herod—a man consumed by a desire for holiness, yet enslaved by his own weakness. Herod admired John the Baptist’s courage but lacked the inner freedom to follow the truth. When the moment of decision came, he preferred saving face over saving his soul. Bound by pride and public opinion, he silenced the very voice that could have led him to repentance.

These two kings invite us to examine the choices that rule our hearts. Do we, like David, let God’s word shape our conscience, even when it exposes our failings? Or do we, like Herod, silence the inner prophet because truth feels too costly? In a world where image often outweighs integrity, the Word calls us back to authenticity. True leadership, whether in family, community, or ministry, flows from a heart that listens to God. The Carmelite spirit reminds us that interior freedom is born in the silence where God speaks. It is in that hidden space of prayer that we learn to discern the difference between the applause of the world and the approval of God.

May we have the courage of David, to praise, repent, and begin anew each day, and the wisdom to resist the Herods within us who fear the light of truth. Then, like David, our lives will become a song of love that glorifies God and draws others to His mercy. It is in our daily choices that holiness takes root. That is the mark of a true leader!

Response: Blest be the God of my salvation!
