TRUST IN THE LORD AND NOT HUMAN ASSURANCES

Human nature often seeks quick success and easy gain, making us vulnerable to false promises. Many are deceived by advertisements or online schemes that promise instant wealth, only to end up losing much. Greed blinds us to reality, and by the time we realize the truth, we have already been ensnared. Gambling and the lure of luck remain age-old evils that destroy families and peace of mind. Today’s readings offer insight into this weakness.

The first reading recalls the downfall of Solomon, once celebrated for his wisdom and humility. He had sought wisdom from God to rule his people justly, and God granted it abundantly. Solomon’s fame spread far and wide, earning respect and alliances even from foreign kings. Yet, success led him astray. Surrounded by wives from pagan nations, he grew complacent and compromised his faith, adopting foreign practices under the guise of tolerance. As his moral integrity declined, so did the strength of his kingdom. The vast empire he inherited from his father David soon crumbled into division, leaving his heir with only a fraction of its glory.

In the Gospel, Jesus also crosses cultural and religious boundaries when He enters the home of a pagan woman. Unlike Solomon, however, His openness is rooted in divine compassion and purpose. By speaking with her, He breaks the taboos of ritual purity, affirming the dignity of every human being. Yet Jesus also tests her faith, and her humble perseverance surpasses that of many within His own community. Her depth of trust moves Him to heal her daughter, revealing that it is faith, and not heritage, that unites us with God. The message is clear: true faith demands trust and humility. We must resist the temptation to seek quick fixes. Salvation is offered to all who believe, regardless of status or background. Christians, therefore, must reject prejudice and uphold the dignity of every person, seeing in each one the image of God. Faith is not a bargain for favors but an invitation to surrender our lives into God’s hands, as that steadfast woman who surrendered confidently to God’s grace.

Response: O Lord, remember us with the favour you show to your people.
