Old Testament understanding and the New Testament understanding itself are so diverse. That is what we see in the gospel passage of today. But truth that is clear both in the Old as well as in the New Testament is that fasting meant repentance and change of life and surely not just for the sake of law as the Pharisees and the Scribes comprehended it. It helps us to keep away from old ways of doing and living and facilitates the adoption of new ways, according to the teaching of Jesus.<\/p>\r\n \u00a0<\/p>\r\n In the gospel, the Pharisees and the Scribes ask Jesus why they and their disciples fast but the apostles do not? Jesus\u2019 answer to them reveals the right understanding of fasting. He gives an example of wedding feast where people rejoice with the groom. Surely it is not the time and opportunity for fasting rather for feasting and enjoyment. Jesus continues that a time will come when the groom is taken away, then is the time and opportunity for fasting. It presents Jesus as the groom in our lives, and we are invited to live in allegiance to him and his teachings, to experience freedom and joy of redemption. But when we fail, due to our sinfulness, then is the time for fasting. Fasting from evil inclinations that take us away from God by disciplining body and mind.<\/p>\r\n \u00a0<\/p>\r\n That\u2019s why Jesus clearly speaks to them on having new wine in new skins and old in old skins. Jesus\u2019 presence and His teaching always remain new, and we need to have an open mind for continuous renewal and transformation. It requires us to put aside self-will and personal intentions, but rather that we live for others, to lay down our personal choices for others. This is the new wine and the new cloth for the new patch, a new way to live.
