At Home and On the Road: Justice and Mercy (Portion Bereshit)

FRIDAY, FIRST WEEK OF LENT

Ez 18: 21-28               Ps 130: 1-8                 Mt 5: 20-26

GOD’S JUSTICE IS TEMPERED WITH MERCY

In the first reading of the day, we are presented with a powerful and convincing message about personal responsibility to do what is right and good. God speaks directly to the people of Israel, challenging them to stop blaming their circumstances on their ancestors and recognising that each individual is accountable for their own actions. The reading reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s mercy, and every person has the opportunity to turn from their sinful ways and receive forgiveness from Him who forgives.

God’s justice is clear: each person will be judged according to their own actions. The wicked, if they turn from their evil and likewise, the righteous, if they turn away from their righteousness and commit sin, will face its consequences. God’s message is that there is always an opportunity for change, but it requires genuine repentance. The heart of the passage is God’s invitation to repentance and transformation.

God is ever merciful. Even when people have lived in sin, God is ready to forgive if they truly repent. He is not a God who delights in punishing the wicked, but rather He longs for everyone to come to repentance. His justice is tempered with mercy, offering a fresh start to those willing to turn to Him. Repentance is not just about feeling sorry for sin; it is about turning away from it and choosing to live in a way that honours God. This kind of repentance brings life, renewing the relationship between the person and God.

For us today, this serves as a reminder that we are responsible for our own choices. We are called to examine our hearts, turn away from sin, and live in a way that reflects God’s justice and mercy. Whether we have strayed from God or are walking faithfully, the invitation remains the same: to repent, return to Him, and receive the fullness of life that He offers.

Response: If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?
