To be Jesus' disciple is an immeasurable privilege (Matthew 23:1-12) – Touching the Sunrise

TUESDAY, SECOND WEEK OF LENT

Is 1: 10, 16-20            Ps 50: 8-9, 16-17, 21, 23                    Mt 23: 1-12

THE CALL TO AUTHENTICITY

In the first reading, God addresses the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, not to commend them, but to confront their hypocrisy. Though they offered sacrifices and observed rituals, their hearts were far from God. Their hands were stained by injustice and neglect of the vulnerable. Yet, in His mercy, God calls them to repentance. True repentance, God reminds us, is not about empty rituals but about transformation – turning away from sin and actively pursuing justice and mercy. This theme of authenticity in Isaiah, is repeated in the passage of the Gospel as well, where Jesus condemns the Pharisees of his time for their hypocrisy. They burdened others with heavy religious demands but failed to live by them. They sought honour, titles, and recognition, forgetting that true greatness lies in humility and service. Jesus reminds His disciples, “The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

The liturgy of the word today calls us to an examination of conscience with regard to our own Christian living. Are we like the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, going through the motions of faith while ignoring God’s call to justice and compassion? Are we like the Pharisees, seeking recognition while neglecting the weightier matters of love and mercy? God’s message is clear: He desires not our empty words or superficial piety but a sincere heart that truly desires to be transformed by His grace. Today, let us heed Isaiah’s call to “wash and make ourselves clean” – to turn from sin and embrace God’s justice. Let us follow the Lord’s example of humility in serving others without seeking recognition. For in the end, it is not our titles or rituals that matter, but our willingness to love, serve, and walk humbly with our God. Let this be our true worship, our true discipleship.

Response: To one whose way is blameless, I will show the salvation of God.
