YOU WILL BE BLESSED AND PROSPER
In today’s readings, God reminds us that blessing and prosperity are closely connected with faithful and sincere work. Saint Paul is a model of responsibility. He tells the community that he worked “night and day” so as not to become a burden to anyone. Paul teaches that work is necessary for a way to earn a living as it is a participation in God’s plan. Honest labour forms character, builds community, and gives dignity to human life. Therefore, laziness and irresponsibility weaken both the individual and society. God blesses those who willingly fulfill their duties with sincerity and perseverance. The Psalm beautifully echoes this truth: “Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in His ways.” The Psalmist confirms that the fruit of labour becomes a blessing when it is offered with reverence to God. Prosperity is not only about material wealth; it is also peace in the family, joy in one’s heart, and the satisfaction that comes from honest effort. A person who works sincerely and responsibly experiences the quiet happiness of knowing that they are contributing positively to the lives of others.
In the Gospel, Jesus warns the Pharisees against hypocrisy. Outward appearances may impress people, but God looks at the heart. One may appear hardworking and religious externally while internally lacking honesty, humility, and love. Christ calls His followers to integrity, to let their actions match their words. Whatever work we do, whether small or great, should be done with pure intention and sincerity of heart.
Today’s message is simple yet powerful: work is necessary, but it must be done responsibly and truthfully. We are not called to live selfishly or depend carelessly on others when we can contribute ourselves. Instead, through honest labour, mutual support, and faithful living, we are called to praise God and be his witnesses. May the Lord, the giver of peace, strengthen us to work with dedication, serve with humility, and live responsibly. Then truly, as Scripture promises, we shall be blessed by God and prosper.
