MARY’S FAITH, OBEDIENCE AND DISCIPLESHIP

In the Catholic Church, Mary is revered as the Mother of Jesus. The Church honours her with particular devotion since she has an indelible connection to her Son’s redeeming work. Today’s passage from John’s Gospel emphasizes Mary’s identity as the Mother of the Church and her presence.

Just as her heart mourned the death of Jesus, Mary felt great distress and sadness as she stood at the foot of the cross. She loved Jesus with maternal affection and now she loves the wounded world. Mary’s role in the great battle against the forces of evil throughout human history is symbolized by her presence at the crucifixion. Mary’s function as the Mother of the Church goes beyond the crucifixion as a historical event. She is the protector of grace and the spiritual mother of all people. The Church holds her in high regard as she has already reached the perfection of existence without spot or wrinkle. As she is exalted as the Daughter of Sion, she helps all her children in their journey towards holiness.

Therefore, when we consider Mary as the Mother of the Church, we regard her as having supported her son during his suffering and death. She prays for all of her children. She is revered by the Church as the spiritual mother of all people and is held up as an example of holiness. Mary’s identification as the Mother of the Church is greatly influenced by her participation in the crucifixion and her status as the Mother of God.

Therefore, let us reflect on our relationship with Mary, recognizing her as the Mother of the Church and our spiritual mother. Also, let us contemplate the depth of Mary’s involvement in salvation history and draw inspiration from her example of faith, humility, and unwavering commitment to God’s will. As we honour Mary, Mother of the Church, we are reminded of the interconnectedness of our faith, the Church, and the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.

Response: Of you are told glorious things, O city of God!
