THE WISDOM OF BELONGING TO CHRIST
Today’s first reading invites us to sit quietly with St. Paul. He speaks words that challenge the way we usually think: “Let no one deceive himself.” How easily we measure life by the world’s standards – success, influence, possessions, and recognition. Yet Paul gently reminds us that God’s wisdom often appears as foolishness in the eyes of the world. St. Teresa of Jesus often reminded her sisters that everything passes and that God alone is enough. St. John of the Cross teaches us to let go of our attachments so that we may be filled with God. The wisdom of the Cross is not about winning arguments or gaining applause. It is about becoming little, trusting God, and allowing Him to transform us from within. When the world asked for signs and miracles Jesus chose to display the foolishness of God’s love on the Cross. Paul goes even further: “All things belong to you… and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.” What a beautiful reversal! We spend so much energy trying to possess things, people, or achievements. But Paul says that when we belong to Christ, we already possess everything that truly matters. Life and death, the present and the future, all are held in God’s loving hands.
Perhaps today the Lord invites us to ask ourselves: Where do I seek my security? Is it in my reputation, my talents, or my plans? Or is it in Christ alone? The more we cling to ourselves, the more anxious we become. The more we surrender to Christ, the freer and more joyful we become. Let us then embrace the “holy foolishness” of the Gospel: the courage to forgive, to serve without expecting recognition, to pray in silence, and to love without counting the cost. This is the wisdom that the saints discovered. It is the wisdom that leads not to worldly success but to communion with God. May our prayerful reflection of the word of God and everything we do today teach us this hidden wisdom. May we live each day with the realisation that we belong to Christ, and in Him, we already have everything.
