ONLY THOSE ROOTED IN JESUS WILL PRODUCE RICH HARVEST

Idols are the man-made figurines to which divine powers are ascribed. They are offered to the devotees to believe and respond accordingly. More often than not these are very effective way of generation of financial resources for the cult priests. It has been part of the long story of mankind. It projects an extrinsic and superficial, religiosity not requiring any attitudinal change. The Church’s teachings, however vehemently object that man made things can ever adequately stand for God; for God’s mystery transcends and rebels from being encapsulated into these. Rudolph Otto, a famous theologian is known to have made this description, God or a divine experience is mysterium, tremendum et fascinans. He describes God-experience as a tremendous mystery that evokes fascination. St. Paul was furious at the resistance of Corinthians to leave behind the former magical ways of their mystery religion bent on placating the innumerable idols and create syncretism with the Holy Eucharist. The resistance of the Corinthians reveal how deeply their hearts and minds were overpowered by the human tendency of superficial religion. St Paul writes to the church in Corinth on the power and encounter of the Eucharist. In his text about the Eucharist Paul underscores the incomparable richness of the Eucharist: mystery of the self-giving love of Christ embodied himself really in the Body that is broken and blood that was shed for us; and invites them to shun the idols which are simply empty and irrelevant.

Life of a Christian does not consist in placating idols or trying to win their good favour to ensure personal wealth, health, success and prestige. Christianity requires change of life based on change of attitudes. It requires renouncement of idols that appear in the form of greed, lust, anger, fame, power, false relationships and individualism. Above all a Christian is characterized by the fruits he bears. Yes the good fruits that give beauty, good taste and joy for the life. Christianity worships God by being transformed into a strong house of solid foundation of virtues and graces.

Response: A thanksgiving sacrifice I make to you, O Lord.
