THE WORD OF GOD: A PRICELESS TREASURE
Experience, teaches, that the Word of God is a priceless treasure. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of the soul and the spirit…” (Heb 4:12). Such was the experience of Paul with the word of God made flesh, which wrought a tremendous conversion in his life. Today we see him exhorting Timothy to proclaim the gospel ‘in season and out of season’, making the most of his time to correct or encourage his flock as each situation demands. Paul is speaking as if testifying in a courtroom where God is present and Jesus Christ presides as judge. He issues a final and solemn appeal to Timothy to fulfill his mission as a teacher of God’s people. His appeal tis that of conviction of his own experience with the word of God in whose service he remained firm until the end. After the hard life of ministry, toil and suffering, Paul’s confidence awaits the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award him. Paul seeing himself at the end of his life’s journey, instructed the young Timothy to take up the mantle of his mentor and continue his ministry of preaching.
Now let us look at the Word made flesh- Jesus, in the gospel. After a terrible search of three days his parents find him in the temple. And, what is He-the Word made flesh, doing in the temple? He is sitting among teachers, posing questions and wrestling with them in the light of Scripture. Jesus’ insights as a boy astonished even the learned rabbis. And, who would not be astonished, listening to the Word made flesh? Today as we celebrate the memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we see that the priceless treasure of her heart, her Son Jesus Christ- the Word made flesh. She treasured him alone in her heart and pondered on him. Whoever turns to this Immaculate Heart will receive this priceless treasure- JESUS. She is our Mother and what she has pondered in her heart she has given us in the rosary to ponder also.
Response: My mouth will tell of your salvation, Lord.
